Obituary for Stanley E. Schickedanz

Stanley E. Schickedanz, 91 year old Fargo rural resident, died Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at his home south of Fargo. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 4, 2018 in the Billings Funeral Home Chapel. A private family burial will be held.

Stanley Ernest Schickedanz was born November 30, 1926, to Grafton and Mabel (McCaslin) Schickedanz on the family farm about one mile north of where his grandparents, August and Mildred (Morrow) Schickedanz homesteaded. Both sets of grandparents homesteaded in Oklahoma when Stanley’s parents were children. His McCaslin grandparents, Mahlon and Daisy, homesteaded in Woodward County.

Stanley and his older brother, Van, grew up on the family farm south of Fargo. He attended the one-room Liberty schoolhouse just north of the home. He then rode the bus to the Fargo School. While in school, Stanley participated in FFA. He raised cattle and showed horses. Stanley often told stories of his childhood, which of course included horses and cattle. He recalled riding his horse to Gage or Fargo and also of driving cattle to Fargo to put on the railcars so they could be sent to the stockyards in Kansas City, Missouri, to be sold.

In May 1947, Stanley and his family saw the tornado coming and into the family car and drove about a mile south and a bit east to a hill. They watched this tornado destroy the buildings on the farm. He lost his colt due to this storm. The Liberty schoolhouse was moved to the farm and remodeled into the family home. It is still used as the family home, although there have been some additions through the years. (This tornado followed the one in April of that year. It was not a good year.)

From 1952 until 1954, Stanley served in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany. He was near where his Grandfather August Schickedanz had been born. From 1955 until 1973, Stanley farmed in the Dupree-Lantry, South Dakota, area in partnership with his Uncles Guy and Ray Schickedanz and cousin Larry Schickedanz. In 1973, he returned to the family farm in Oklahoma and continued to farm and ranch with his folks on the family farm, and on which he still lived.

On April 8, 1978, Stanley married Lisa Hoffman (a Yankee from Illinois). They were blessed with four children: Mary Ellen, Thomas Morrow, Samantha Eileen, and Grace Elizabeth.

Stanley was a life-long member of Liberty Baptist Church. Stanley was first baptized as a child in a creek three miles west of the farm. He was baptized again when he was 85 years old. He attended the old country church as a child, and was still attending after Liberty Baptist moved into Fargo.

Stanley is survived by his wife, Lisa; children, Mary and Steven Range, Thomas and Ginger Schickedanz, Samantha Lamping and partner Jeff Wall, and Grace and T.J. Neeley. He is also survived by nine grandchildren: Breanna, Karyn, Ashlyn, Andrea, Alisyn, Cashion, Delilah, Lane, and Ladd. Also, Orson and Debbie Hoffman of Maroa, Illinois and many family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother and sister-in-law, Van Mac and Laurine Schickedanz, and other family members and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Fargo-Gage Schools or the charity of your choice with the funeral home accepting the contributions.
