Obituary for Wilma Jeanne Hepner

Wilma “Jeanne” Hepner, 84 year old Freedom resident, died Monday, December 25, 2017 in Woodward, surrounded by her family. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 29, 2017 at the United Methodist Church of Freedom. Burial will follow in the Haskew Cemetery.

Wilma Jeanne (Gibson) Hepner was born August 8, 1933 in May, Oklahoma; she was the daughter of Melville Anderson and Valma (Shuyler) Gibson. At a young age, Jeanne attended May schools before her family bought a ranch southwest of Freedom. Jeanne rode her horse five miles with her brother to a country school. She was the only girl in the school. Around the seventh grade she started going to the Freedom school and graduated from Freedom High School.

She was united in marriage to Harold Dean Hepner on May 23, 1951 at the Freedom Methodist Church in Freedom, Oklahoma. They made their first home in Freedom. During Harold’s time in the military she moved to Woodward and worked at the Stock Exchange Bank for a period before moving to South Dakota. After Harold’s military service they moved to the family farm. While raising her two children, she attended Northwestern Oklahoma State University and received both her Bachelors and Masters Degree. After her graduation she taught school until her retirement in the early 1990's. After she retired from teaching, Jeanne opened an ice cream and soda fountain store. She later opened Prairie Stitches and Monogramming. She also ran a bed and breakfast, the Sage N Saddle, all the while helping Harold on the farm and ranch.

Jeanne was a member of the Freedom United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School, lead the singing, and lead children’s choir.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Harold Dean Hepner of the home; two children, Lyndon Hepner and wife Susan of Edmond; Sharon Harper and husband Ty of Freedom; grandchildren: Johnathan Hepner and wife Sara, Lynsey Janzen and husband Andrew; Kristin Harper; Kelsey Harper; Kylee Harper; one sister Ethel Thornton of Kansas City, Kansas; other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother Dean Gibson, one sister Dewey Finley, two brothers-in-law, Nelson Hepner and Dave Hepner.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, Alzheimer’s Research with the Billings Funeral Home, 1621 Downs Avenue accepting the contributions.
